Save Essex Landscape (SEL), a nonprofit organization, was created by Essex residents in early 2021. SEL was established to give voice to our community, to bring awareness to issues affecting our neighborhoods and landscape, and to inspire participation in town government.
The Great Marsh ACEC
(Area of Critical Environmental Concern)
The Great Marsh ACEC includes 25,500 acres of barrier beach, dunes, salt marsh, and water bodies. More than 10,000 acres of salt marsh makes this the largest salt marsh system north of Long Island, NY. Included in the acreage is Essex Bay, Essex River, Ebben, Lufkin, and Soginese Creeks in Essex. We need to protect this natural resource and local treasure, thereby ensuring its integrity for generations to come.

The Essex River and its estuary make up 13% of the Parker River/Essex Bay's ACEC, which equals 3,435 acres of the most diverse and productive habitats in the state.
